What is the Abbotsford Convent?
The Abbotsford Convent is an extraordinary arts, learning and cultural precinct in Melbourne, Australia. It is an invaluable resource for the arts community, for training and education, employment, an incubator for creativity and the sharing of ideas, a place for community participation and enjoyment.
There are studios and creative spaces for artists, writers and designers, spaces for arts organisations, spaces for rehearsal and development of creative work, indoor and outdoor function spaces, galleries, cafes, restaurants, bars, arts/craft/fashion markets and special events.
Its 11 heritage buildings, extensive formal gardens and open spaces are spread over 6.8 hectares of inner-city land, formerly a closed monastic village operated by the Sisters of the Good Shepherd as a refuge for women and girls in need of care.
