Logo Design Brief

Our Need: We need a logo design to 'brand' and identify a research and development (R&D) project we (Mapping Futures) are currently working on. We want to give the project some prominence when talking to potential collaborators and have a professional feel to make it easier to pitch our ideas for further funding.
Our Project: The idea for the project came in response to a call to look at how cross-sectoral collaboration can be inspired that engages practitioners and citizens in re-defining and re-shaping public space. The “rethink public space” idea aims to connect culture, communities and democracy. Our project, titled “Surfacing the Hidden Services of Public Space through hyper-local data campaigns” aims to unpack the current practices around public space design, practices of participation (or lack thereof) in this process of design and the role that open data and big data within the realms of smart city concepts ultimately plays in making this process more democratic by connecting cultures and communities together.

Our Methodology: Our proposition looks at how we make visible the hidden services of Public Space through exposing its “data” within its physical context. It is our view that as citizens, we feel more empowered to participate and contribute to a debate about a public space if we know something about the space in question. Knowledge gives us the power to feel confident in our contribution. Often this knowledge is centred on personal experiences manifested as perceptions of a space, yet this is not the full story. Through the linking and placing of information about a particular space, our project seeks to understand whether revealing the invisible data within its geographic context can initiate new interactions, new purposes or better design thinking. Currently public space design centres on visible services of a space, be it ecosystem services represented by a park’s green infrastructure; or economic services when a public square is converted to a farmer’s market at the weekend; or social, through the placement of facilities and festive events for interaction and enjoyment. We are, however, rarely made aware of the space's invisible services, those that affect us on a subliminal level impacting our health and wellbeing (such as air quality, design affordances impacting our mood and psychological well-being). By revealing this invisible knowledge we aim to encourage democratic decision making on many levels that work towards creating a dynamic and responsive design process for the co-creation of spaces that truly provide public benefit.

Design Requirements: Logo needs to be fun, engaging, ‘reveal’ the above ideas about what it is trying to achieve. Notions like “what you see is not what you get”, “scratch beneath the surface” to look further than what is obvious need to somehow be visualised. whilst we work in a predominantly urban setting, it is just as applicable to rural settings. Caption for logo is "Revealing Spaces" but doesn't necessarily have to have it; perhaps two options so that in some contexts it can be used with the text.
