Book Cover Design Brief

Introduction

Hello! Attached you will find a combination of my own amateurish attempts at graphic design and also pictures that have inspired me. With the obvious exception of the ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘Lord of the Rings’ stuff, I have purchased the other images so they are fair game to be used (contact me if you want the hi-res versions).

I hope that by showing you these, I might be able to convey what I’m looking for in a front cover and a website. I’d just like to make a few points that might also help you understand a little better.

1. The book is called ‘The Goat’s Tale’. It is a 'knights of the round table' type story so I would like
2. My concept is 12 tales, each told by a member of the zodiac. I would like the first front cover to be designed in such a way that the following 11 can be thematically linked together. The Goat’s Tale is obviously the Capricorn’s tale.
3. As Capricorn is an earth sign, I would like the colour scheme to be green and brown. I would also definitely like the motto to be ‘Push the Sky Away’.
4. The name of the series will be ‘Tales of the Zodiac’ and I would like this written somewhere on the front cover.
5. My Nom de Plume is going to be PJ Hetherhouse.
6. There is room for quirkiness in the design. The book itself is, I may say so, dryly humourous and, also, is set in the future. This allows for a slight twist on more traditional heraldry.
7. It would be nice to include a stylised zodiac wheel that could appear on all the books and the website. It would be one of the motifs that links the books together. In the story, a round table of the zodiac is set up. This is a fusion of astrology and Arthurian legend.
8. My main concern with my own design is the colouring. I was concerned that it looked a little cheap to have a single matt colour. I was thinking that some sort of texture of w/e might add a bit of quality to the design. This is not a deal breaker and, as I said, I would regard it as a safe option if the above change is made.
9. My perfect design would be more like an ACTUAL shield with elements of classic heraldry but a a subtle nod to dystopian mad max / hunger games type art work.
