Poster Design Brief
We are a German-based ensemble specialising in contemporary classical music, and are currently seeking an artist to design a poster promoting our forthcoming crossover concert mixing contemporary art music with tango. Although much of our work concentrates on traditional concert formats, with an ensemble on stage in front of a seated audience, we also frequently perform in more relaxed or alternative environments. This concert will be amongst our more extravagant presentations, aiming at a broad, popular audience. The evening will begin with performances of experimental concert works. Its centrepiece will be a screening of the Bunuel/Dali tour de force "Un Chien Andalou", complemented by a vigorous and edgy performance of a work composed especially for our ensemble by the prominent composer Ricardo Nillni. The concert performance is dominated by art music drawing on tango and popular dance styles, with the formal concert atmosphere transitioning over the course of the evening into a milonga dance extravaganza, the entire audience being free to participate in dancing to our own live musical accompaniment of tango Argentino, interspersed with offerings from a local DJ.
The conceptual link between the concert and the milonga is the film "Un Chien Andalou", one of the greatest and most influential films of the "roaring 20s", which premièred to an experimental mixture of the gravitas of German Romantic music and the vigour of Argentine tango.
We are looking for a poster that gives prominence both to the experimental, avant garde nature of our concert performance and to the popular tango element, while tying in with the themes and aesthetic of the film "Un Chien Andalou". The challenge to you as designers lies in combining these three elements. One suggestion would be to use the aesthetics of the film (black & white, surrealistic), combined with a striking tango motif. Of course, any and all suggestions are welcome – whatever excites your flair and creativity, and we are more than happy to provide any further details should you so require.
The film is available for viewing on youtube, while our logo is attached to this call for proposals. Feel free to visit our website at www.elperroandaluz.de.
Updates
Hello all,
We're very impressed with the designs so far. Two aspects are very important that wouldn't have been clear from the original brief, and if it isn't too much to ask. Firstly, we need the words "Konzert", "El Perro Andaluz" (or "Un Chien Andalou") and "Tango" to be clearly visible at first glance. Secondly, as purveyors of contemporary music, we tend to prefer sans serif or at least fairly stark fonts over florid ones. Thankyou very much for your excellent work so far.
