Illustration Design Brief
We would like a unique (more realistic than abstract, and more "art" than "logo") image of The Sacred Heart of Jesus for our church Sanctuary, branding, signage, website, glossy newsletter and stationary/letterhead.
This is a difficult project. The artist/designer should be familiar with Catholic symbolism and art, yet possess the ability to "translate" those symbols into a visual presentation which is both evocative and contemporary, while at the same time very obviously sacred.

Requirements
Must have
- 1) The image needs to be of "the heart" itself, and not of the traditional "Jesus standing and pointing at his own heart".
2) Stylistically, we would like it to shade more towards realism than the usual "pious" and somewhat gentle, sentimental or "sanitized" versions, without being too "raw".
3) Essential elements must include:
a) crown of thorns,
b) wooden cross at the top,
c) the open "slice wound" in the side with slight trickle and
three dripping droplets of blood.
4) the entire heart and cross should be surrounded by "active" flames (again, more realistic than stylized).
5) Additionally, the "setting" should be 12 rays of light on a graphical layer behind the heart, emanating from the center point of the heart. (NOTES: Rays need to be of varying width, and shaped like "horns" of light spreading and dissipating in intensity as they leave the heart. NOT the traditional depiction "pointed" rays.)
6) Finally, the essential impression of the viewer must be one of a vibrant, fleshy flaming heart, rather than simply an "Anatomy and Physiology" reference diagram.
Nice to have
- Two versions of the image:
1) Both a higher detailed version for glossy print and website,
2) and lower detailed version for smaller placements and limited quality, unprofessional (color and b & w) printers.
Should not have
-
Should not have an overall pink "valentine's day"/"clip art" shape, but rather SOMEWHAT more realistic heart shape.
