Logo Design Brief

We need a fun, bold & professional new logo design for a start-up non-profit pilot program dedicated to building resilient and sustainable communities. Please DO NOT submit generic logos you have developed for a different project - read the design brief carefully and submit work that matches what we are asking for.

Community Resilience Organizations (CROs) is a new pilot project in Vermont emerging from the experience of flooding during Tropical Storm Irene. During that storm, we saw that many community groups play a role in resilience and hazard mitigation, including fire & emergency personnel, local government, citizen volunteers, conservation orgs, local businesses and social service organizations. Unfortunately, those groups don't often coordinate and work together as well as they should, and they rarely come together to proactively build resilient communities, prepare for disaster events, and adapt to climate change before problems arise.

CROs will create teams of local leaders and stakeholders from all of these fields and help them complete concrete actions that will build stronger & more resilient communities. They will plan local "Days of CROing" when volunteers come together to plant trees, distribute emergency planning kits, clean out culverts, strengthen communications networks, and celebrate and build community.

We have an existing logo with some conceptual strengths, but we need one with a more professional design. We are attaching the existing logo and asking for new designs that incorporate the feedback and preferences below. We are also attaching a PDF with some logos that we like and comments about them.

We are also attaching a very rough concept for the direction we would like to go - like keeping the three birds, like the idea of silhouettes and holding tools, but this concept is poorly executed and the shapes are still a little too complex. Feel free to take this idea and change it or do it better!

Please be in touch with any further questions or clarifications!

Requirements
Must have
  • - We are looking for a logo that conveys the following community values: fun, quirky, informal, forward-thinking, innovative, collaborative, unusual, local, youthful
  • - We are looking for a design that will convey the following organizational values: professional, clean, modern, competent, creative, bold
  • - We like the notion of using crows/birds, but would prefer silhouettes or a design with a more modern and professional feel than the current cartoon look
  • - We want a logo with simple lines and strong contrast (much simpler than the old version we are uploading).
  • - It should reproduce well for multiple sizes, use on the web and in print materials, on banners, t-shirts, etc.
  • - Incorporate the whole project name ("community resilience organizations") in at least one version of the signature. If you feel it's too long, we could use a different version of the signature with just the acronym (CROs) or just a graphic.
  • - Probably a color palette with multiple colors, and some bright but clean (not over the top) colors. See the "Logos we Like" doc - we like the colors in the VT FEED and Front Porch Forum logos.
Nice to have
  • - We like the notion of the crows carrying different "tools" representing emergency management/volunteers/social service (fire hat, shovel, basket, etc.). See current design file we uploaded. They do not necessarily need to be the same tools, but something signifying these different aspects of the community is important.
  • - We are interested in a logo that could potentially be customized by various communities. Local towns & cities will have their own CROs teams... currently, there is space at the top where a town name could go. The new design does not necessarily have to use the same format, but might be a strength.
Should not have
  • Cheesy, unprofessional graphics
  • Corporate, slick, or cookie cutter look and feel
  • Extremely detailed graphics
