I've designed a cover as a suggestion.
The brief is quite literal and specific so I have interpreted it into something a bit more simple.

Design (especially for fiction/film) isn't usually supposed to tell the full story (that is for the author to do) but rather capture the essence/idea and set the tone. The film posters for Saul Bass are a great example (my favourite is 'Bunny Lake is Missing' it has a simple shape of a little girl cut out of paper, so simple and yet so clever). I'll submit my version shortly and hopefully you'll see what I mean.

Note: it is a low res pdf. High res can be made for print if you are doing a print version but you're also likely to need a spine and will need to ask your printer how thick this is going to be and consider what text you want on it.
