Book Cover Design Brief
We need a book cover suitable for PRINT (both trade paperback and hardcover).
General design notes: Prominent color. Photo-realistic elements. Sophisticated. Some dark/shadowy areas.
Genres: Literary, Mystery/Thriller/Suspense
Subgenres: Metaphysical, Action & Adventure
Back-cover text: Could a dark agenda be woven into the architecture of China’s most sacred ancient temple? An agenda that only Julian Mancer is seeing? Or is Julian off his meds again? If the structure were in fact a doomsday device awaiting an astronomical tripwire—could Julian stop it? Especially if, wound within his own DNA, lay the very same agenda? Julian is determined to discover the answer, as soon as he concludes a far more pressing matter involving a sixteen-year-old girl with a most intriguing mutation.
This book as been described as "A richly told, diagnosably insane, meandering yet captivating journey through everything good and bad about sex, drugs, and China---plus a wildly improbable tale about saving the world. In short, not to be missed."
The cover MUST INCLUDE:
1. Something that clearly indicates China.
2. Something that suggests the occult, supernatural, metaphysical, or mystical, ideally with a Chinese spin.
3. Something that suggests depravity or sin of some sort, or at least a general sense of edginess. (The main character is a gambler, addict, and womanizer)
4. "The Year of the Hydra"
5. "A novel"
6. "William Broughton Burt"
7. The back cover needs the back-cover text and a space for an endorsement (you can use the endorsement above).
Three possible ideas:
1. A Tsingtao beer bottle broken in a gutter on the right, the book title and author name crowded on the left. with Chinese star charts above.
2. The torso of a beautiful woman who mutates into a seven-headed hydra that has Chinese-style dragon heads, as the centerpoint of the cover. Author above, book cover below, or vice versa.
3. A Chinese Feng Shui compass, half going off the page, or I Ching trigrams, or a Chinese dragon head, or similar, with the book title and author name taking up most of the cover, with not-too-bright Chinese star charts behind.
Anything else you want to try is fine---we would like to see creative ideas!
