I guess it depends on the overall design of the cover.

I don't have a specific concept for title size, as long as it all looks good as a thumbnail. Suggest you take a look at some book thumbnails on Amazon to get a general idea.

Your brief is a little confusing. You say that you'd like to incorporate the "dark" Shanghai, opium, triads and so on, but you later say that you'd like Art Deco, which totally simplifies the concept.

Please clarify what you prefer more an artistic illustration of Shanghai and the environment of outlaw life or simplified Art Deco style that might use the same colors but won't be as literal as illustration.

I personally prefer an illustration or maybe simplified illustration, however, it is up to you.

I like the samples you provide, they have an interesting quality.

Just one thing I would not necessarily agree with in you comment. You seem to suggest that the dark gangster underbelly of Shanghai and the Art Deco style are mutually exclusive. It must be one or the other but can't be both.

I guess what I was trying to say is that the city of Shanghai in the 1920's was a very Art Deco city in terms of architecture, popular fashion, design, etc, (there was a big graphic design industry in the city at the time) but AT THE SAME TIME there was huge gang activity, drug smuggling etc happening in parallel.

So I guess what I am trying to capture is the vibe of a period in time in a certain place.

I'm not sure if that helps clarify things at all.

There will not be a physically printed book. Just an e-book on Amazon. So we need something that looks good on a computer screen and thumbnail.
