Business Card Design Brief

Background info: Nature, flower, landscape, macro, wildlife photographer. Shoot color and B&W images. Sell prints at juried fine art shows.

Looking for two-sided, clean, memorable design with creative use of my initials, JW. I like the JW symbol in the my logo. Just use the JW symbol. Do not leave the underlying text as uploaded by me. I do not like the serif font and positioning of the words! Either remove the small print "Jerald Winter Photography" under the logo, or change to a sans serif font, or reposition with "Jerald Winter" above "Photography" which seems to work with serif fonts.

I have received 40 submission in 3 days with 7 more days to go, so there is stiff competition with some really creative, classy designs that capture exactly what I am looking for. It is going to be tough to narrow down to the top three.  Sadly, I am having to eliminate some decent designs. I am also taking back my bad idea of possibly doing a play on Winter season. It's turned out to be just tacky and ruin some otherwise good designs. Also, I am not so fond of front and back of cards submitted as two different designs. If you have done so, please resubmit as a single design or else I will eliminate it due to many other superb designs.


Last, thank you all for taking the time and effort to create some beautiful cards. I am in awe of graphic artist talent.

Please see my updated brief with  very specific "must have/use" and "do not have/use", especially regarding the "Jerald Winter Photography" text under my JW symbol . I do not like the current font or positioning of the text in the version I uploaded.  Due to the number of very superb designs that I have received, I am going to be forced to eliminate all designs that do not meet this requirement.


I continue to be impressed with the creativity, talent, and quality of submitted designs. It inspires me  & challenges me to be a better photographer!

If using just one line address, make sure there is a comma after  "CT" in street address. For example:

513 Eagles Nest CT, Winston-Salem, NC 27127

The participation and quality of designs is impressive. 22 designers have submitted 101 designs in just four days, and there are six more days to go. Because of the high quality of submission, I am having to be quite aggressive eliminating designs. Nothing personal, just lots of great designs.  Seven designs remain in contention at the moment. Three other designs are waiting punctuation correction above.

For designers not familiar with punctuation of US street addresses:

US street addresses are most commonly done with  street address on one line, then the city, state  & zip code on second line with a comma between the city name and the two letter state abbreviation. (It is the format used when sending mail.) No commas are put at end of address lines. Here is how it should look if using a two line format:

### Street Address
City, XX #####

or in my case

513 Eagles Nest CT
Winston-Salem, NC 27127


If for stylistic reasons a designer wants the address on one line only, then a comma is put after the street address and after the state. Here is how a one line version should look:

### Street address, City, XX #####

or in my case

513 Eagles Nest CT, Winston-Salem, NC 27127

Addresses never have commas at the end of lines and they never have a comma between the state two letter abbreviation and the zip code.

Thank you all for submitting such great, classy designs. I have narrowed down to 15 designs (from 160) and I am going to take several days to choose the top three cards.  I really would like to choose about six designs!

  • 1.No icons or pictures of camera or lenses or other photographic gear or film strips.
    2. No QR or other "barcode" type symbols.
    3. No outlining of my logo symbol (drop shadow possibly).
    4. No decorative or outlined fonts.
    5. I am not a fan of most script fonts.
    6. No play on "Winter" such as snow or other winter season symbols.
    7. Do not keep the original text, "Jerald Winter Photography" under JW logo. Change it or remove it entirely.
