Logo Design Brief
UPDATE: thank you again - these designs are fantastic, and we're really excited. I've been getting emails from designers asking whether there are any logos that really jump out at us, so we did a few searches and would like to post the following two. This is for designers submitting new designs - if you've already submitted, there's no need to worry about it (unless you really want to!)
Also, we're posting these only from a graphical point of view - not from a font point of view.
First up: Dubai International Airport
http://www.dubaiairport.com/DIA/images/logo.jpg
Second: Thompson Reuters
http://www.ala.org/ala/aboutala/offices/dev/libchamps/img/thomson_reuters-logo.png
The last thing, and it's only small, but we're hoping to have a typeface that makes the name seem shorter, rather than longer than it is.
Cheers guys!

UPDATE: thank you for all the designs so far. Given the quality of the submissions, we have decided to guarantee the project and extend the deadline by a few days.
Also, given the submissions so far, we have been able to more accurately describe the brief. These are *in addition to* what is written below.
- the logo should only use crimson and greyscale (ie either black, white, or somewhere in between). the crimson we want to use is in the HBS logo you can find at this page:
http://www.hbs.edu
- the logo should be on the left, and the text should be beside it on the right
- the text of the logo should be left justified
- the height of the logo should be the same as the height of the text
- the text can go for up to three lines
- the key words in the text are "growth" and "innovation". if you think it looks good, you can add emphasis to them (either larger, or in a different colour, but you don't have to... only if you think it looks good!)
- there should NOT be more than three colours used in the logo and the text (e.g. crimson plus two shades of greyscale would be three colours). two colours plus white/black as the background seems to be the sweetspot
- logos can be a picture, or text relating to FGI. we've also seen some good submissions without either, so it's entirely up to you (I'll repeat that - if you think your text looks good, you don't need to submit a logo with it!)
- simple seems to be best!
- finally, please avoid 3D effects like shadows and reflections
Thanks again for your submissions so far. We look forward to picking a winner soon!

ORIGINAL BRIEF:
Hi there,
This project is going to be a logo design for a center studying innovation, strategy and growth within Harvard Business School in the United States. The aim of the center will be to engage with some of the world's top executives, and publish research as to how the areas of innovation, strategy and growth interact. It's important that this isn't just a research center though - we will be working with some of the top practitioners, and we want the logo to engage them too.
The primary tension for the logo will be between the fact it is focusing on innovation and growth, but that the center will be housed inside one of the oldest universities in the US. A great design will be able to draw out that tension!
Finally, while the main logo will be the full name (The Forum for Growth and Innovation), we would also like to make sure the design could be acronymized down to FGI as well (this is secondary, however).
There should be a fair amount of prestige associated with the project, so any designers looking to make your mark - this is a great opportunity! We look forward to receiving your submissions.

Must have
- - the logo should only use crimson and greyscale (ie either black, white, or somewhere in between). the crimson we want to use is in the HBS logo you can find at this page:

- - the text of the logo should be left justified
- - the height of the logo should be the same as the height of the text
- - the text can go for up to three lines
- - we will need a copy of the logo that will work on a black or a white background (we can work with the winner to sort this out, however; we are assuming we will just invert white/black design elements)
Nice to have
- - the key words in the text are "growth" and "innovation". if you think it looks good, you can add emphasis to them (either larger, or in a different colour, but you don't have to... only if you think it looks good!)

- - some examples of logos that we really like are attached: Dubai International and Thompson Reuters
- - the font should make the name seem shorter than it is (rather than as long, or longer than it is!)
Should not have
- - there should NOT be more than three colours used in the logo and the text (e.g. crimson plus two shades of greyscale would be three colours). two colours plus white/black as the background seems to be the sweetspot
- - please avoid 3D effects like shadows and reflections unless you think they look really, really good
