Web Design Brief
Task Description:
We need a new website for Talkspot.com, an established company that has been around for 10+ years.
Our website is fine, but we believe more is possible.
We are seeking a new look and feel, as well as a new "sales message". We're not sure that visitors to our site immediately understand what we do, and how we are positioned.
We are looking for a new design (including the major text on the pages), for the principal webpages. The physical implementation we can handle.
Our product is do-it-yourself websites and blogs, for home users and small business.
Our system is widget based, with powerful tools and widgets that provide features well beyond "just a website." For instance, we provide all of the mailing list management, security, hosting, and powerful widgets like shopping, discussion forums, payment buttons, etc. Our mission is to put the powerful tools, normally available only on websites costing tens of thousands of dollars, and make them available to people who know nothing about web design, and don't want to learn.
The price for our product begins at “Free” for a website or blog with good functionality but limited storage. For $3 a month, we provide a more robust product including a personalized URL/Domain, more storage and additional tools and for $10 a month customers get a very robust system including outbound email and newsletter capabilities and powerful search engine optimization tools.
The overall goal of the website is to solicit people to sign-up for a free website. Doing so requires no credit card or other obligation, though the customer does need to provide some limited contact information and agree to our EULA.
Our current website is at www.talkspot.com, but we encourage prospective designers to disregard any information they find there directly associated with the product capabilities. We are open and eager to move forward in a new and fresh design direction.
Must have features:
The goal is signup for a free website, so a clear path into the sign-up process is paramount.
Ultimately our goal is to get users who will benefit from our services enough to pay at least $3 a month for services, so a product that targets people with specific needs that they are willing to pay for (businesses/enthusiasts) over casual users (children/teen) is needed.
Target Market: Our core users are small-to-medium sized businesses – usually sole proprietors who are very hands on. We also have a large base of affluent enthusiasts who engage in boating, breeding (dogs/horses), and casual activities. We also have some amateur sports teams, personal family websites and general consumer traffic.
Scope of project: We're looking for the key pages on the site, the wording for the key points on each of the principal pages, and the overall look/feel. We want something that communicates clearly what we do, and why customers should try our product.
Delivery: We're ok with any type of delivery of the finished product. The site can be mocked up in powerpoint, photoshop, or HTML - whatever. We're looking for a site we would want to buy from, that communicates succinctly and clearly what we do, and why we are the best (or, at a minimum takes away the fear of giving us a try). Once we have this, we are open to contracting you to do the physical html implementation, but see this as a seperate project.

Reason: I haven't seen any designs yet that seemed different enough from what I have to excite me.
To motivate designers, and simplify the project, let's take this approach:
- I only need the homepage (Originally, I was asking for a few pages)
- I'm happy with submission in any format
- Your design doesn't need to have all of the copy. You can greek the small print. I just want to see the overall look, and sales messsage (images, headlines, and section headers). Give me enough that I can easily envision the finished product
Important: As soon as I see any design that interests me, I'll make the money non-refundable

I've just made the money non-refundable, so someone is going to get a payday.
This is the feedback I gave on the most recent design:
"...On the right track. I like this. Best so far.
My only comments:
- A subset of our product is free, so I don't like to say "Try it now", because most users are in fact paying nothing, and yet getting tremendous value.
- We should reference that it is "websites and blogs" .. not just websites.
- If you find a place to put it, we could/should(?) mention three things that might lend credibility to us: 1) In business since 1999, 2) Built over 100,000 websites, 3) My background (Founder/CEO Sierra On-Line, leading consumer software company)
Thank you!
Ken Williams
PS I am making the money non-refundable. You are in the lead....
