you said: Must Have:
- - Fixed width (1024px), should fit on an IPad2

lol.. html5, css3 has cured that. I am redesigning one of my sites and it's full screen html5 - check it out on your ipad.

a place holder now )

"It's Just A Web Thang"

Just A Web Thang says: (SOFTVision) Staying on the cutting edge of the web is a full time occupation. Why I suggest html5.

HTML5 is at the core of the new internet and the technological heart of a forward thinking mobile strategy. Anything that can be accomplished via Flash can now also be built using open standards with HTML5.

HTML5 means more than just HTML

Those in the industry know that when people say HTML5, they mean more than that. They are referring to additional standards: CSS3 and jQuery (JavaScript) are critical components of new HTML5 apps and websites. Using these technologies developers can create sites - and applications - that are flexible enough to evolve as the internet and mobile platforms evolve.

HTML5 is standards-based

HTML5 is a standard that has been released by the W3C. This means there is no one company responsible for or has control over the features it will include. The net of this compared to a closed source application is:

Long term stability
Better accessibility to people
Better accessibility for machines

For more arguments around why standards are good google the WASP project.

HTML5 works for Mobile (and everywhere else)
One of the reasons HTML5 is such an exciting platform is because it offers the opportunity to use a single codebase on multiple platforms, including mobile devices like the iPad and smart phones. And an HTML5 codebase, doesn't just handle mobile.

Notable HTML5 Developers

There are a few people who are worth paying attention to due to the depth of their HTML5 development knowledge, or their ability to make HTML5 more understandable.

Jeremy Keith works at Clearleft, and wrote the brilliantly easy-to-read book HTML5 for Web Designers. He is a member of the HTML5 Super Friends, and when Zeldman decided to publish a book about HTML5, Jeremey Keith was the first person he called, based on how well he was able to explain HTML5 to the rest of the Super Friends. (follow him on twitter)

Bruce Lawson works at Opera, and wrote the book Introducing HTML5. He's converted his personal blog to HTML5, and is a regular contributor to HTML5 Doctor. (follow him on twitter)

Mark Pilgrim works at Google and is writing the book Dive into HTML5 for O'Reilly, which you can read online for free. (follow him on twitter)

Will see if I can have a live HTML5 site up for you by tomorrow eve.
