Poster Design Brief

SUMMARY: We need a 27" x 40" (standard size) movie poster for a feature film, Karaganda.

TAG: "I only ask for one thing"

Film summary: After destroying a Russian airbase in a botched arms deal, Vladimir, a Brighton Beach (New York) gangster, must survive the ensuing mafia war and keep his family safe. Set in 1994.

Half the film is set in a 1980s Soviet prison camp called "Karaganda," which resembles a Soviet gulag. In a flashback, we reveal that Elena, the wife of Vladimir (the main character), was also imprisoned in a nearby camp. To find her, Vladimir joined the Vory v Zakonye, or thieves-in-law, an elite criminal group in the camp. By the time he gets to Elena, however, she has been abused by the other Vors. The love story continues as they raise the child in the USA.

(Still in VFX, missing barbed wire above fences and guard towers, etc. that will be filled in.) Our camp is similar to Perm-35, photos of which are available online. Our wide VFX camp shots are not yet finished, however.

DESIGN TIPS: It's important that the main character Vladimir be featured prominently in the poster AND that we know it's a mafia film. Hence, we recommend using a gun shot or the tattoos, etc. to anchor your design. We also have a logo we love - though it's not required to use. If you can work in the prison camp/gulag element great - but it's not required. The film also has segments with Soviet MI-24 Hinds helicopters in a remote airport shootout, so if you could work that in that would also be great. But also not a requirement and simple designs often work best.

WHAT WE DON'T WANT: Though we have a Soviet theme, we don't want to see Cyrillic letters or hammer and sickles added to the design.

DELIVERABLES: Your final file MUST be a layered PDF or other editable file.

CHECK OUT OUR SHORT FILM POSTER: We sourced our short film (in 2013) via design crowd and loved the poster. It's included as a reference. Also included are the project's pitch deck and the font from that deck (Bodoni). There is no expectation to imitate this design, but it may give you ideas. We love this pitch deck so you can get a feel for our taste and the project overall.
