Infographic Design Brief

Dissolved CO2 Removal For Fish Transport Infographic

Background
When fish breathe underwater they pass water over their gills and absorb dissolved oxygen (O2) from the water and at the same time release CO2 into the water as dissolved gas. The process is similar to humans, with the exception that the O2 and CO2 is absorbed from the water rather than being breathed in as a gas. When live fish are transported by road, rail or air they are typically packed into large sealed bins with water and one of the challenges is to be able to fit enough fish onto a bin to make it commercially viable, while maintaining the health and welfare of the fish. And the more fish you have the more CO2 will be released into the water, which often contributes to high mortality rates and poor health outcomes for the fish. So the removal of the CO2 from the water during transport is often essential to being able to achieve the dual outcomes of market viability and healthy fish.

Infographic Requirements
The infographic needs to illustrate clearly the process described below for the removal of dissolved CO2 from the water in sealed live fish transport bins. Also see the attached image that provides a graphical description of the key processes.

- Live fish are transported in sealed bins with water
- Fish take in O2 from the water and at the same time expel CO2 into the water as part of respiration.
- Keeping CO2 levels in the in the water low improves the survival of the fish results in better health outcomes.
- The process selectively removes CO2 from the water using a gas specific membrane that water is pumped through
- There is a sweep gas (air) from outside the bin is pumped through the membrane in the reverse direction to the water that takes the CO2 removed from the water and expels it outside the bin.
- The water is continuously re-circulating through the system and the air is always fresh from outside the system with no re-circulation.
