Why MacAnima
MacAnima is the contraction of two latin words: machina and anima. Machina means « machines » (we kept the abbreviated form, « Mac »). Anima means « soul ».
Cognitive Computing solutions are the next generation of artificial intelligent systems (machina) able to mimic the functioning of the human brain and capable of performing tasks normally requiring human intelligence (anima).
And machina anima became MacAnima.
Aristotle also wrote a treatise, called « De Anima » where he is talking about people’s intellect. It was the first time that cognition was discussed (very shortly).
“Thinking both speculative and practical is regarded as akin to a form of perceiving; for in the one as well as the other the soul discriminates and is cognizant of something which is.” Aristotle, De Anima, Book III.
Our brand name is also a kind of tribute to this treatise.

Why this orange circle between Mac and Anima?
In Greek mythology, Hyperion was one of the twelve Titan, child of Gaia (Earth) and Uranus (Sky). He and his brothers were believed to have cooperated in the creation of human beings, and each one gave humankind a gift. Hyperion’s gift was sight. His name means "he who watches from above". Hyperion was ascribed the characteristics of the "God of the Light, Watchfulness and Wisdom".
Hyperion is best representing a vision and approach to Cognitive Computing:
Watching things from above, lightening them from different angles, will make it possible to collect more information and process this knowledge to explore multiple solutions and pick-up the best one (decision making process).
Watchfulness can be compared to the state or quality of being vigilant or concentrated. This occurs during the day, while our cerebral cortex is activated, enabling attention, perception, awareness, thought, memory, language, and consciousness.
Wisdom is the quality of discerning and judging properly as to what is true or right. It is a kind of mental disposition of the soul. It can be considered as an important virtue helping people doing the right thing, at the right time, and in the right way. It is one of the necessary steps to go to be well and happy.
In order to represent the characteristics of Hyperion, we took the symbol of the sun, which is a circle and used it to separate the word Mac and Anima. It was important for us to do this since for graphical reasons we wanted our brand name to be written in lower case and people could have thought that it could be a single word, macanima.
