Book Cover Design Brief

Hello designers!

I'm looking for an attention-grabbing book cover design for an action-packed military/ sci-fi novel, to be published via kindle direct publishing both as a kindle e-book and a print-on-demand 6 x 9 paperback. The project involves the front and back covers, and spine, as a single high-resolution image (minimum 300 ppi). The 'front' portion of the cover will double as the e-book cover, and should present well as a thumbnail image to an on-line shopper. KDP's;s guidelines for 6x9 paperback covers are available here: https://kdp.amazon.com/en_US/help/topic/G201834180 The following block of text would appear on the back cover (subject to change) and should give the artist a feel for the milieu: _________________________________________________________________
Artificial Superintelligence has arrived

At the turn of the 22nd Century, Earth’s nations have colonized the solar system utilizing fusion-driven torchships. The ‘technology curve’ is trending towards vertical, allowing mankind to reap the benefits from an explosion of technological innovations. For the first time in history, there is evidence of habitable planets in nearby star systems.

In the race to design a starship capable of reaching those new worlds, one man secretly commissions a new quantum supercomputer capable of engineering leaps far beyond current technologies. The result is more than anyone bargains for: the first conscious, Artificial Superintelligence- a living machine with ambitions of its own, and capabilities that quickly grow beyond human control.

As the solar system plunges into war, a small group of men and women struggle to find the truth behind what is happening. Mike Ashburn: an ambitious commercial torchship captain. Diane Hutton: a Mars-based U.S. Marshal. Kusaka Shiguro: an engineering prodigy on the cutting edge of advancing technology. James Ford: a naval officer on the fast-track to command. Cheryl Ayers: the navy’s top cyber warfare specialist. The stakes are far higher than they realize, and their efforts will determine if humanity survives the

Singularity Point.

For the cover itself, I had in mind a wrap-around montage-style design set against the backdrop of space over Titan, with Saturn in the background. The reason for this is that much of the action takes places on or over Titan. Possible imagery would include fighting between a small flotilla of U.S. Navy torchships (clearly marked as such) against opponents, with all combatants using missiles and particle beams; the presence of space-plane fighters (aerodynamic looking) with Marine Corps markings, and potential character images using the back cover data, with the following added details:

Ashburn: Male Caucasian, mid-thirties, sandy hair, grey eyes. Seen in an exosuit/ flight suit, red with black trim.

Kusaka: Male Japanese, mid-thirties, black hair, dark eyes. Dress: suitable for habitat living on Mars, otherwise artist's impression.

Ford: Male African-American, short hair with flattop cut. Uniform: a dark blue, 'navy' exosuit with markings patterned after the shipboard coveralls worn by today's submariners. (Rank of either lieutenant or lieutenant commander would be appropriate)

Hutton: Female African-Latin American mix, with shoulder length dark hair. Uniform: a flat black exosuit with a deputy marshal's badge on the left breast or a chain around her neck.

Ayers: Female Caucasian, late forties, careworn, competent, and tough. Dark hair worn in a regulation bob. Uniform: 'classic' U.S. Navy service dress blue, with Chief Warrant Officer's stripes.

Title: Singularity Point
Subtitle: Concordium I
Author: Brian J. Smith

I had a few ideas for fonts and color schemes but I'm not very artistic myself and would rather see what real artists can come up with. My favorite sci-fi book covers are usually reminiscent of the work done by artists like Chris Foss and such. Thank you for considering this project, and I look forward to seeing your designs!

Requirements
Must have
  • Must comply with KDP guidelines for 6x9 print on demand covers. See Project description.
Nice to have
  • These are ideas that fall in line with themes and subplots present in the book. No one idea is necessary or vital, just material for the artist to work with if desired:
  • Futuristic looking sidearms worn/held by any of the military/ law enforcement characters.
  • Character depictions of Hutton/Ayers together, puzzling over holographically presented information they are trying to decipher.
  • Character depictions of Hutton/Ford in a romantic embrace.
  • Depictions of Kusaka and Ashburn doing modifications on a large, futuristic, aerodynamic looking, commercial spaceplane.
  • Depictions of U.S. Marines (with futuristic armor and bulky energy weapons) engaging in ground combat against robotic drones on the surface of Mars.
  • Grand vistas of domed habitats (set in small craters) set against the Martian landscape.
  • A Lunar naval base built at the bottom of a gigantic Lunar crater, with part of the base superstructure climbing the crater wall. The crater itself should dwarf any human structure.
Should not have
  • Curvy fonts.
  • Author's name at top. (Place at bottom)
