Logo Design Brief
OUR COMPANY: Portland Leather is a three year old startup e-commerce company working in a beautiful, bright workshop in SE Portland (let’s be real, it’s the coolest part of town).
OUR TEAM: We are made up of 40 talented makers and artisans. We design, hand-make, and market more than 50,000 individual products and ship them out to more than 70 countries.
WHAT WE NEED:
A STRONG logo mark
We love the idea of something with a more primitive look: think woodcut or cave drawing
OR... We like the potential for use of an animal: beaver, dinosaur... something strong and iconic
• If it’s an animal, we like unique, fun, different (NO COW OR BUFFALO).
• AGAIN, we like a more hand-drawn feel of a logo that is still strong (think woodblock prints or early, simple cave drawings). That said, you are definitely able to branch away from that style. We don’t want 80 submissions of the same thing!
Strong FONT : “Portland Leather”
• This can be a unique font solely for Portland Leather, or an existing font.
• Open to various style of fonts, but just note it can’t be too thin as it won’t brand well.
• The Font must work well with the Logo Mark. We want a strong Logo Mark that can stand alone, but also pairs perfectly with the font of Portland Leather.
• We DO NOT WANT any “PL” or “PLG” abbreviations for the logo!!!!
Strong Color
•We like mustards/yellows, to fit with our bright, happy aesthetic, but are open to other colors as well.
Important: REAL-LIFE Fire-Branding
Our images will literally be fire-branded into our leather goods (pictures below).
When designing the logo, it will need to be translated into a black and white logo to be stamped on our leather products. We aren’t opposed to gradients, but keep in mind they will have to still strongly translate into a black and white image too. Please see images to see how we brand our actual products. If there is too fine of detail, it will not brand well.
AND, at times we will just Fire-brand the logo, sometimes just the name and sometimes BOTH.
OUR BRAND:
Mission: Design amazing leather goods made by strangely happy & abnormally talented people with a price and a quality that will make you smile.
Vision: While we have already established a name for ourselves, to take our brand to the next level we want to create an identifiable, Portland brand that becomes a destination spot when people are in Portland (similar to how Starbuck’s flagship store is a huge destination in Seattle).
Audience: We sell online to people all over the world. Currently our audience is mostly women (around 80%), aged mid twenties to mid forties. In the future we hope to balance it to about 60% women, 40% en, probably same age range, by offering more men’s products.
Some of our core values: being a fun, approachable “neighborhood” store. Creating quality leather products. Having a super fun working environment, full of dogs, great coworkers, and good music.
The Words to describe us are: Fun, Clean, Minimal, Friendly, Simple, Cool, Portland, Real, Bright, Authentic, Smart, Happy, Approachable.
Words that do not describe us: Traditional, Old Fashioned, Leather Maker (in the traditional sense— think dark woods, and leather tools, Midwest ranchers).
Why we are Different: Throw out your thoughts of dark brown, dark craftsmen workshops where everything is dark and vintage and dirty.
