Logo Design Brief
We need a logo design for a corporate rename and rebranding of a non-profit based in Portland Maine. The organization is called "Maine Policy Institute" and works on public policy in Maine, including working to pass legislation in the state capitol in Augusta, public issue campaigns, as well as analysis and evaluation of general public policy questions in the state. We approach public policy from a conservative/libertarian perspective, though much of our work is essentially neutral to non-partisan.
We are open to a variety of design ideas and have no preconceived desire for anything specific. The one thing that we likely do want, though, is the use of the colors, which are Navy Blue, Gold and White. Those can be used in any combination of main color, accent, etc. They are simply symbolic to political philosophy and we like the combination. That said, though, if you can make a good case that other colors are a better idea, we are listening.
For fonts, we are looking for a sans serif, in all likelihood, and I am fond of clean, sharp fonts like Bank Gothic or similar type of font -- a clean modern look to the text would be a desire we have.
The design itself has no requirements. It can be simple and businesslike, it can be highly abstract -- we are open to anything. I think including some notion of our general philosophy (liberty, freedom, self-determination, etc) would be nice, though not absolutely necessary.
The one thing we don't want is to be generic and cliche. So, given our perspective on public policy questions, a logo designer would immediately gravitate toward the state of liberty, or a torch, which are signs of liberty of course. This, however, is far too common and unless you can make it really creative (which I admit is possible) we probably want to stay away from that.
You could also think about building in something that harkens to the state of Maine into the logo. You could try the silhouette of the state, a lighthouse in the shape of the Portland Head Light lighthouse, something to do with lumber or pine trees (we are the pine tree state and have a lumber heritage), possibly a lobster (though I'm not sold on using an animal given that we work on serious public policy issues)... or perhaps the Maine State Capitol building. Anything like that would probably be appropriate.
I have included some attached logos from organizations like ours across the country that we tend to like. You do not need to copy these logos, but maybe they can help you understand some of the styles we like.
tl;dr -- You have free reign and we want creative, interesting submissions
