Icon Design Brief

The Minnesota Guardian ad Litem Board provides child advocacy in child abuse and neglect cases. The program is creating a new case management system that advocates and program staff will use for most of their work, including the entry of Hours and Expenses. The system will have Child, Case and Child Outcomes sections. We are considering icons for each of the following sections: 1) Hours and Expenses; 2) Children; 3) Cases; 4) Best Practices; 5) Child Well-Being; 6) Notes; 7) Court Reports; and, 8) Child Outcomes. The focus of child outcomes is finding a permanent home for children as quickly as possible, whether through reunification or in an adoptive home.

Additionally, we are looking for an icon/logo for the system itself, although we have not settled on a name yet. The predecessor system was 'Galaxy'

Target Market(s)

Target market is: 1) the Guardians ad Litem who will use the system. The demographic is overwhelmingly female, age is diverse, but would probably trend toward middle age rather than new grads; and, 2) supervisory staff whose composition is similar; 3) potentially external stakeholders who might have access to some program data on a 'public dashboard'.

Requirements
Must have
  • No must haves other than that each icon must convey the idea it represents. For example, the children icon should convey the idea of children. The icons should be thematically consistent.
Nice to have
  • A color palette that is less than 'government' but not unprofessional. Users of this system will be on it daily, so a palette that is pleasing and contributes to a positive user experience is very helpful.
  • Integration of the outline of the State of Minnesota would be nice. http://mn.gov/guardian-ad-litem/ is an example
  • Some sense of diversity because the program serves children of many races and ethnic backgrounds. Having said that, we need to be sensitive not to create something stereotypical or offensive.
Should not have
  • Anything that directly conveys the idea of abuse and neglect. The theme is positive and moving toward positive outcomes for children.
