The "Independent Financial Advisers Association of Australia" is a not-for-profit organisation set up to promote the need for independent financial advice, and clarify what independent financial advice looks like.
We want to educate consumers about what true independence means and its unquestionable value to them as investors.
We want to give those financial advisers who are genuinely independent an opportunity to promote their independence and stand out from the pack. It should be easy as possible for consumers to find genuinely independent practitioners.
In Australia there is a food industry group called the Heart Foundation who advocate wise food choices that are likely to be healthy ones. They developed a logo called the "heart smart logo" which food producers can use in the promotion of their food products as being healthy, provided their products meet certain criteria (low fat, etc). We want our logo to be have that sort of recognition in the public.
There are various definitions in the market place for what constitutes "independent" financial advice. We believe our definition constitutes a "gold standard" in independence, and it consists of three elements. Financial advisers must be structured in such a way so that they ...
1) Have no affiliations, associations or ownership links to product manufacturers. This can taint the impartiality of the advice.
2) Not accept or receive commissions from financial product providers. Commissions are things that are recieved by salespeople, not genuine advisers, because commissions cause advice to be horribly conflicted.
3) Not charge "asset fees" in their advice. That is, advisers who charge fees that are calculated on a percentage of product shifted or assets under advice are charging based on quantity of product rather than quality of advice. We eschew that approach to advice because it increases the likelihood of prepackaged solutions.
Together these three elements form the "gold standard" of independent advice.

The financial advice-seeking Australian public. We are particularly interested in the higher net worth or higher income market. This is generally populated by 40+ year olds, married, business owner or busy exec"s.
