CD Cover Design Brief

Hi All,

I manage a small sound recording studio and need assistance with CD artwork, notably converting pdf image files to Photoshop, on print-ready templates, to submit to my CD duplication and packaging service

CD Name: “Who’s Been Here?”, artist's name: “Dr. G’s Good Medicine”.

In addition to the technical skill required to convert my images to Photoshop format, some creative design flair is desirable: the attractive superimposition of text (e.g., CD title and artist, liner notes, song titles, etc.) onto images, and the creation of professional-looking CD labels, is also required.

So I need a cover created using the images provided with the title and details superimposed.

I have planned on a folded rectangular insert to give 4 squarish pages – printed in color on one side of the rectangle, and monochromatic on the other.

I have executed this as a mock up, which you can view in 3 scans. Scan [ "… 0018.jpeg" ] is the cover, or page 1, which will be visible through the jewel case
and the RIGHT-HAND half of a rectangle to be folded in two.

Scan [“…0019.jpeg” ] is the LEFT-HAND half of the same rectangle – though it should be rendered in COLOR, not B&W. Once the rectangle is folded, it becomes the 4th page, or back, of the insert. and

To recapitulate: the color side of the virtual rectangle, once the pictures in [ “…0019.jpeg” ] are properly rendered in color, would constitute the front "cover" [“...0018.jpeg” ] – visible through the plastic jewel case – plus the back of the insert
[ “…0019.jpeg “].

Scan “.0026.jpeg” is the mockup of the inside of the folded rectangle (pages 3 & 4) and constitutes the liner notes. The liner notes are provided as ".doc" file [ "WHO'S BEEN HERE? liner notes & song list.docx" ].

I would like to see the old-fashioned picture on the bottom right of the liner notes scan expanded, and used as a lightly-rendered background photo on which the liner notes text is superimposed across the entire rectangle (pages 3 & 4), rather than used as a little picture at the end (as it is in the mockup).

Attached to the brief are all the actual photos used for the mockups. This particular picture [ "Scan...20031.jpg" ] is degraded in the project folder "Who's Been Here?". A cleaner version will be attached to the brief separately. It is file [ "...10000.jpeg"] (Alternatively, the image could be lifted from the scan, although it has been cropped a bit.)

Again, these scans are only of the mockup.

The name of the band [Dr. G’s Good Medicine] , and the name of the CD [Who’s Been Here?], would need to be added to page 1 (front cover, or RIGHT-HAND SIDE of rectangle before folding), or Scan [“…0018.jpeg”], in some funky old (1920’s or 1930’s-style) font – without obscuring the faces of the band.

The text of the liner notes and the song list are contained in the ".doc" file "WHO'S BEEN HERE? liner notes & song list.docx".

The name of the band and the song list needs to be added to the back tray card, which is mocked up as scan [ “.0027.jpeg” ].

The "Vague Moon Records" logo [see ".psd" file] also needs to go on the back tray card.

The name of the band and the name of the CD need also to go on the spine (edge).

A monochromatic CD label would have to be designed. I would like to see a suitable background picture (perhaps a 1920’s train image or cityscape, or a picture of the band) with the band name and CD title, and song list. (The folder contains a mockup of a CD label, which I constructed from clip art.)

If more pix are requested/desirable, I would be happy to provide additional ones. Scan [ "...10000.jpeg" ] is a sample from an earlier cassette version of this CD.

Guidelines for setup are provided by the duplication company, "Nimbit". These are available at:

Requirements
Must have
  • A funky, old-fashioned feel. The music is all from the 1920's and 1930's - honky tonk, blues, and "jug band" style. Therefore fonts, and artistic treatments should be reflective of those times, not modern, new age, psychedelic, or anything suggestive of "rock & roll".
Nice to have
  • A lightly-rendered picture as a background picture for superimposed liner notes.
Should not have
  • Anything flashy, psychedelic, hyper-abstract.
