eBook Cover Design Brief
"The incredible adventure of Sevy Lemmots" (Die unglaublichen Erlebnisse des Sevy Lemmots) is a novel classified by the author (Yves Gorat Stommel) as fantasy/young adult fiction. It needs a front cover for an eBook. The task will include providing the cover with the English title, the cover with the German title, and just the "plain" cover without title.
Motive-wise, I'm thinking about a landscape with fields, with one single villa (neo-gothic, somewhat run-down with bullet holes, 2 stories + roof) lying at a deserted country road. In the background there could be some groups of trees. At the forefront, the main character could be standing, his hands on his waste, possibly next to his 1982 car (Chevrolet). The villa should have a real presence, as it is filled completely with fantasy creatures (refer to story breakdown below). Not sure if the cover would allow to show any of them in the house/windows because of the design size. This is up to the designers. It might be a possibility to just show some eyes (white against black background) in the windows. But again: I'm open to any ideas.
Style-wise, I do like covers as attached (starting with the framed-book like type), but am open to other ideas. The characters should NOT be photo-realistic but stylized (closer to graphic novel-style)
Part of the story revolves around:
Sevy, a young artist (painter, mid 20s, dark hair, three-day beard, normal stature) moves into a house out in the fields, which turns out to be overflowing with trols, nuchelavees, leprechauns, dwarfs, pixies, and other fantasy creatures. Trapped in the house by an old spell gone wrong, they drive Sevy crazy with their compulsive but often funny behaviour, while at the same time a group of so-called "bad" fantasy creatures, led by a nuchelavee (skinless horse) are starting to kill off some of the inhabitants of the house in order to get Sevy to move out. For the most part of the book, the tone is light and funny, with some darker moments here and there.
Updates
Dear designers,
again thanks a lot for your very nice designs so far. It's easy to see you all spent quite some effort on it, and I highly appreciate your quick reactions to my feedback.
However, as I mentioned to a few of you, a still am not 100% on board with the feel of the designs. Important for me are, that the design shows:
* the connection to the fantasy genre
* a somewhat lighthearted feeling (more comedy than tragedy)
* non photo-realistic graphics
In order to give you more degrees of freedom, I want to suggest the following possibilities:
* Lose the car. It is not at all important for the story and opens up the design. I would like to see improvements in the "house in the fields" design, but feel we're not quite getting there. Hence another option:
* Instead of using the house, I'm ok with other designs as well. I could imagine that having the main character and a few (3 or 4) fantasy creatures (pixies, leprechauns, dwarfs, ...) might do just as fine and could make the atmosphere lighter. One possibility of doing this would be with backlight, where the fantasy creatures are then mainly defined by contours (making the design easier).
* If you have another idea based on the brief, PLEASE feel welcome to pitch it to me. I'm open to all of your creativity :-)
All in all, as the cover will be seen only as an icon or on an ereader screen, it shouldn't be too cluttered.
My excuses for adapting/extending the brief halfway in the contest, but I think this will make it easier for you to get the right atmosphere in the design.
All the best,
Yves
