Logo Design Brief

I have a growing online following on both my Youtube channel and blog, and I feel in order to build the brand I need a great recognizable logo. The channel and blog is called "binarythistle" which is a combination of the words "binary" relating to the numbering system consisting only of zero's and one's, and "thistle" which is national, recognizable flower of Scotland, (my home country).

I'd like a logo that is highly recognizable, preferably without wording, but am open to any creative ideas. The logo will be appearing as the avatar on my Youtube channel, (see attached example), so should fit nicely in a "square".

The logo should "scale well" i.e. it should work at lower sizes / resolutions, so a highly intricate, complex design is not really what I'm after. Colour-wise I'm tending towards black and white as I feel this speaks to the "binary" component of our name.
