Logo Design Brief
First, some explanations on what we do:
Our group, based at McGill University, Montreal, Quebec, Canada, is focusing on epigenetics research. From Wikipedia: "Epigenetics is the study of changes in gene activity which are not caused by changes in the DNA sequence. It is the study of gene expression, the way genes bring about their phenotypic effects."
In other words, "[...] elements that control cells and circumstances in which a gene is active". (taken from http://genome.ucsc.edu/ENCODE/)
The group is composed of two parts. The EMC (Epigenomics Mapping Centre) is dealing with sample collection and preparation in laboratory to be analyzed by specialized equipment. This equipment produces computer files of results, which are then given to the EDCC (Epigenomics Data Coordination Centre), who analyzes the results using high-performance computer networks, and make them available to the scientific community.
Ultimately, the results we are producing are offered as "tracks" which are viewable in tools such as the UCSC Genome Browser: http://genome.ucsc.edu/cgi-bin/hgTracks
We need a logo for our web portal, which showcases the results of our work. This logo will be the face of our research group, included in our posters, etc.
The chosen logo should be modern and have a "science" feeling to it.

Requirements
Must have
- The image part of the logo should be detachable from the text, and ideally have similar height and width.
Nice to have
- Ideally, the pictogram part of the logo would be simple enough that if we shrink it to a size of 50x50 pixels, it would still look "ok". (and "recognizable" in a 32x32 pixels size)
Should not have
- Please avoid the DNA double helix cliche.
