Logo Design Brief
I am launching a research group to study the language (or rhetoric) of chemistry. I think a visual logo will provide the group with identity, and be incredibly useful for branding power point presentations, research posters, etc. There are a lot of chemistry labs, so I am mindful that our logo should distinguish us from chemistry (yet also link us back to them). We aren't chemists; we are researchers who study the history and language of science. I included a sample of my research, in case that helps to get a feel for what we do. We can be wordy, as a research area, but I want this logo to cut through that. It is, more than anything, a recruiting tool to draw in talented graduate students and catch the eye of other faculty.
Here is my website: http://www.robinejensen.com/
Note: I think I want to call it the Chemical Rhetoric Group. I am 100% sure about Chemical Rhetoric, but I am open to alternatives to the word group. I would prefer to avoid "lab" as that might confuse us with chemistry labs.
Update (if you are looking for inspiration): The language of chemistry is heavily influenced by alchemy, which could be a source of imagery or inspiration. Drawing connections between the two, or focusing on alchemical imagery. Our work also involves lots of archival research: reading old manuscripts, letters, and lab notes. Examining artifacts that are tagged with old-fashioned chemistry labels. Finally, if people are depicted in the design, it would be ideal if they were female (e.g., Marie Curie or Irène Joliot-Curie). Recovery is a part of our research program, including the recovery of women and their role in chemistry.
I added several photos of Marie Curie and her daughter Irene Curie. Marie Curie won the Nobel prize (twice) and her daughter later won the Nobel prize as well. I love the photos of them working together, and would love to see a logo that incorporates some of that imagery. I have also included some 1800's style chemistry advertising, mainly for the aesthetics. I could see a logo incorporating some of that too. Just a few ideas. :)
Target Market(s)
Attracting graduate students to my group, notably PhD students in Communication. Helping researchers in history, English, and philosophy identify our group. I want people to see the logo and think, "Oh, cool, I want to be a part of that group."

- An image would be nice. Everyone has logos that are just words. I am hoping to have some sort of picture. Though I am open to a logo that is just words, if someone has a creative idea about how to do it.
