Book Cover Design Brief

Design of book cover of Volume 1 of Last Terminal, called 'Ghost on the run'.

The book (first in a series of at least 6) is about a singaporean-chinese Taekwondo world champion who dies and ends up in a Terminal, where he gets an halo implanted in his chest that gives him the time he has left before he has to take a subway to hell.
With the help of an angel he manages to get back to earth for a short while to visit his mother.
It is both a supernatural story as well as a conspiracy thriller, mixed with a difficult relationship between the main character and the angel, and their escape from the Terminal. The tone of the story is both emotional, cruel and humoristic.

Typographics
- The book cover needs of course the title (Ghost on the Run) as well as the series name (Last Terminal Volume 1)
- the authors name (Stefan Struik)
- the typographic needs to be big because the book will first of all be published as ebook

Images
- I am thinking about a sort of eternal hell fire on the bottom (coming back on the later covers as well)
- a muscled chest of the chinese main character. On the place of the heart, an 'halo' implanted, half a centimeter deep burned into the skin. I included a part of the chapter where the halo is implanted. The middle part still skin. The halo itself quite futuristic (since the after life will be dominated by all kinds of futuristic equipment)

Here a part of the chapter.
11 THE HALO

Kim Gil-Su is still sitting on his office chair, plunged in thoughts, when a futuristic tone of a buzzer brings him back to his daily business. He gets up quickly, swipes wrinkles out of his pants, straightens up, grabs a neatly ironed and folded black shirt from a side table and starts putting it on while he answers. "Yes…"

The frosted glass door of his office swishes open and the limping officer enters.

Gil-Su observes him while he buttons his shirt.

The officer bows and then walks towards the desk, shuts down the holography, unrolls his glass-plastic plate and lies it on top of a small light spot.

Despite or maybe thanks to his uncomfortable confrontation with the shadow just a few minutes ago, it all doesn't go fast enough for Gil-Su. "Talk to me."

"This one might interest you master Kim. He just came in."

"I know."

The officer tries to suppress his surprise. Gil-Su seems almighty but he has no clue how his superior does it.

Gil-Su is fixing his cufflinks, little silver skulls. "Bring him on."

The officer shouts an order back in Korean. " 그를 데려 "

Gil-Su looks disapprovingly. There is only one who is allowed to raise his voice in his office and that's him. He decides to let it go.

The two soldiers bring Zack inside. Gil-Su grabs a short black whip from his desk and folds his hands with the whip behind his back, trying to restore his image as an intolerable boss, observing how his guards bring Zack in front of him. "Zachary Lim."

Zack reacts quickly in a challenging tone. "And who are you?"

Gil-Su gives a totally unexpected blow with his whip against Zack's cheek. "SP's are not allowed to ask questions."

Zack is totally taken by surprise. "What’s wrong with you guys?"

Kim strikes again, this time much harder. It doesn't have the effect what it normally does to the victims of Kim Gil-Su.

Zack’s irritation turns into anger. "Don't do that!"

Gil-Su wants to strike again but suddenly a powerful arm of Zack keeps Kim's wrist in a deadlock. This time it's Kim who is taken by surprise.

Zack's voice is trembling with rage. "That... was not a question."

For a moment Kim as well as his guards are overwhelmed by the fact that someone is opposing the big chief. Then the restoration of balance starts. "How dare you!"

This is the sign the guards were waiting for. They first needed a few seconds to recover from the surprise move of Zack, but then they start to beat him with their sticks, and they have no intention of stopping.

It only pisses Zack off even more. But it must hurt. One blow hits his arm, cuts his sleeve and rips his skin open into an undeep but bloody flesh wound. The truncheons have a devastating effect on human bodies, dead or not. Despite the severe beating Zack doesn't take cover but instead uses the surprise attack. A primal cry escapes from the depths of his lungs and instinctively he chooses the limping officer right in front of him as the first target.
(>>>>>>>>)
(>>>>>)observes how Zack crippled body hits the floor. No look of triumph, no anger. Gil-Su is actually more surprised about the amazing powers of Zack. He looks for a moment to his officer who is not giving any sign of life anymore, and to the other soldier who is too dizzy to stand up. Then he looks the remaining guards in the eye. "Why didn't you halo him?"

The two guards don't know what to say.

"Give it to me. I'll do it myself. Bring him up."

The smallpox guard bends over to the seemingly dead officer and grabs a sort of wide metal tube from a holster at his belt and hands it to his master. At the end of the tube glows a red circle of light. The two guards take no chance and tackle Zack upwards while they rip his shirt completely from his muscled body. They hold his chest up where blood is dripping from the skincut.

Gil-Su notices the impressive muscles with a slight form of jealousy. "Quite some work-out." He turns the tube as an accomplished cowboy gunman three times through his fingers before he presses with a graceful sweep the exposed tube side against the left breast of Zack. For a moment he holds it there, while he slowly removes the palm of his right hand a bit from the back of the tube. "Let me work this out for you." And with a short sharp blow, he slashes his palm against the tube.

The front of the tube penetrates Zacks skin up to half an inch deep. Zack screams in total pain and even has the power to let the guards struggle to hold him in place. Gil-Su gives the guards a sign to let him go, and to let him slowly realise what just happened.

Gil-Su throws the tube back to the guard and then looks again at the still half paralysed Zack. "Say hello to your new friend."

Zack slowly removes his hands from his painful chest. Right above his left nipple he discovers a red circle of red light with a cross section of approximately four centimeters. The circle is almost perfectly round. A small red light dot vibrates like a heartbeat. The circle of red light seems to lie roughly half a centimeter deep into his flesh. Zack is too shocked to say anything.

Added Sunday, October 06, 2013

i'm going to shorten the deadline. I am not getting any designs in for the past four days, so I decided to place the deadline on the sunday night 13 October.  I found one good designer out of the 8 designs, who I think will do a very good job. But if there are still designers who are willing tot take part, please let me know this at the latest this coming sunday night.
many thanks
Stefan
