Hello,

I think the prize is way too low for this project. 15 illustrations for just $120 to the winner. If you can consider to increase the amount, I'm sure it will attract designers to join.

Regards...

Thanks for the feedback Ralph. This is my first time using Design Crowd, and now that I've seen the backend and how it actually works, I think I understand the process a bit better. Listing fees and runner up award actually make this expensive. Design Crowd taking 15% of $180 would be fair all around, leaving the $153 for the designer. But it is what it is...

What would you charge an off the street client for something like this. When you consider a full Logo Design package should cost between $500 and $850, and that is going to be your business identity for the life of your company (research, multiple rounds of feedback and changes, PITA clients). This project is a no-brainer. Either you can copy the style of the original or not, and these un-sophisticated designs should not take more than 20min tops each for a pro.

I was looking to the crowd to see if one or two designers could nail this style down and submit. I hope I find em!

As you can see you have only 1 design submited and may not complete your request. Designers here dont care if DesignCrowd cuts 15% fee from your money, they are taking 15% from our payout too.

hello,
Is there any chance you would be willing to take your identity in a different direction. I understand that you love the logo and clearly you have a successful business, but I think you can market towards children much better with a higher quality illustrated logo (and quality illustrated characters to match), brighter colors, bolder easier to read text. I hope I am not being disrespectful and out of place in saying this, it is just my opinion.

Brian,
As the digital marketing manager for BD4K, I''m not emotionally attached to this logo and I appreciate your feedback. I agree that this is a little dated and that speaking to the modern consumer could be easier accomplished with a slicker graphic deployment. However, as a designer, you also need to realize the cost of re-deploying a comprehensive marketing initiative. BD4K has banners, business cards, brochures, a website, social media profiles, print advertising, re-marketing campaigns, stickers, magnets and countless other marketing assets that bare their logo and branding. A complete refresh of the BD4K concept would cost thousands of man hours and tens of thousands of dollars. Now as a designer, I could see how that would look great! Hundreds of billable hours... But what about the history of the company? The household name? BD4K has established itself under this logo and branding. As service providers in the world of marketing, professional designers (and strategic consultants) must concentrate on the essential needs of the client. I don''t think your being disrespectful, I just believe that you need to account for the big picture.

So Silviu,

DC is taking $40 +fee from me, gives $20 to runner up, and takes 15% from your payment? Thats some serious double dipping. They are making money on the front end and the back end. I honestly think I would rather pay designers directly in the future. This service sounds like a good idea, but I''m not sold.

That''s not to say I did not get a submission that I believe we will accept. But I kinda feel fortunate to have gotten lucky. What is your impression of this service as a designer? Do you find that you''re wasting a lot of time submitting proofs and not closing projects?

Some people have no respect for designers - I am in shock at what this contest is asking for and to me this is slave labour. How long are designers supposed to spend on illustrating? This fee doesn't cover national minimum wage - I dont know why Design Crowd isn't doing anything about this?? The sum being offered is below the legal amount you can work for in the UK.

useless - no clue

design isnt cheap - your business will continue to look shabby and unprofessional if you dont spend money on it

Thank you for your antagonistic and completely useless comment(s) Harding Designs. Thank you for elevating the conversation and providing useful feedback. Your comment makes absolutely no sense. How is this below the minimum wage? Unless you expect the designer to spend 10 hours on this simple task... And since when is an internet service subject to the rules of Her Majesty''s Kingdom? Can you point me to the statute from Parliament that sets the legal limits for a designers time?

Allow me to reply: This was the first time I used Design Crowd. The process was not clear from the onset. They have a suggested design contest rate of $180. Even after originally submitting for quotes, it seems that Design Crowd was pushing the $180 contest so I gave it a shot. I agree that the rate that goes to the designer is not what it should be, nor what I was expecting. I also know must protest and clarify that I have an extreme respect for designers and the work that WE do. As yes, I have contracted with hundreds of clients for my own designs. This one-off project seemed like a good candidate for testing out crowd sourced design. It''s out of my stylistic wheelhouse, and specific enough that only a designer who was confident that they could match the designs would realistically submit an entry. The client did not have a huge budget, and I don''t have any local freelance illustrators in my book who could tackle this project.

Well, it seems that not all designers share your outrage and disdain. I received a few submissions from competent designers who were happy to provide a few simple illustrations that will enhance my client''s marketing. I was not asking for the world here. Just some simple line drawings that would take a professional designer a very reasonable amount of time to pump out in their spare time. So I thank all who submitted work, questions and thoughtful, helpful feedback.

To those who want to rage against me, best look inward and figure out why you''re so mad? It''s not my fault that a polite, respectful Indian designer took this Job; you were unwilling to do it. That being said, I prefer to work locally and will not be using this service again.
