Logo Design Brief

St. James is a 125-year old Episcopal church located in California's central coast wine region. We recently hired a new priest and are expanding the ways we serve our congregation and surrounding community ... which is the perfect time to refresh our brand. We're starting with a logo that captures the essence of who we are and where we're going, and we welcome you to submit your ideas!

In order to make this creative brief as helpful to you as possible, we surveyed our members on keywords and phrases that best describe St. James. The top five responses that describe what we represent to our congregation, our community and to the world we share are:

1. Welcoming. This is God's table, all are welcome here and we exclude no one. We really mean it!
2. Family.
3. Scripture-Tradition-Reason. We welcome people to think, discuss, debate and wonder about the meaning of scripture, liturgical traditions and faith practice. We do not presume to have all of the answers, and together we seek to explore the wonder of it all.
4. Sharing God's love.
5. Inclusive. We believe in the dignity of all people, and we exclude no one on the basis of societal labels and judgments. Come and be who you are ... after all, who would Christ exclude?!?

What we'd like is a logo that captures the welcoming in, and the reaching out that we extend to our community. Love, family, inclusion and dignity are what we're about.

We will use the logo on our website, email newsletters, social media headers, and on our printed bulletins and publications.

The color palette is up to you -- feel free to chose colors, hues and shapes that best communicate through your design what we stand for. Same goes for font styles and colors -- whatever you think best captures what we're trying to say.

Note: The word 'inclusion' often invites rainbows and other inclusion imagery used by LGBT organizations. That's not how we see ourselves. While we are progressive and inclusive, the themes of welcoming, sharing, family are really what define us. It simply doesn't matter what your gender orientation is, and we're not going to brand ourselves around this aspect of ourselves. The plain fact is we welcome everyone, which is why the themes of welcoming in and reaching out are important motifs to consider in your design.
