Logo Design Brief
This logo is for a small company called Third Stream, based in Portland but with international reach. We provide consulting services on ecological aspects of riparian area enhancement and restoration, integrated social-ecological research, grant writing, monitoring and project management. Our primary customers are watershed councils (non-profit groups that focus on community based watershed management), and city and county agencies and universities.
"Third Stream" is a term coined in 1957 by American jazz musician Gunter Schuller to describe a new form of music that is "the result of two tributaries...the improvisational spontaneity and rhythmic vitality of jazz with the compositional procedures and techniques acquired in Western music".
We chose this name because it invokes "streams" but also describes a fusion of different skills, approaches, and disciplines that creates something different. Our mission is to contribute to sensible, efficient and effective natural resource management and information generation that supports ecosystems, and community livelihoods.
We are envisioning a logo for our company that isn't exactly a confluence image but that draws from that (i.e. maybe three colors, such as blue and yellow coming together in horizontal streams to make green) within a square shape, but are open to creative ideas. Black and white or different colors than those already suggested also OK. We do not want something overtly musical or specifically a river confluence because that is too constraining and goes in the wrong direction. We want something suitable for our website and business cards.
Updates
We really appreciate everyone's work so far. After looking at a number of designs we think three colors might be too much and would be open to one or two-color designs. We're partial to the slender, modern fonts. Thanks again.
