Beyond the Zone – Campaign Mission
A recent 2012 research study conducted by the University of Minnesota researchers found that teens are using steroids and muscle-enhancing substances at higher rates than previously thought. The study found that 5.9 percent of boys in the survey reported using steroids, while the rate among girls was 4.6 percent. The findings were surprising, especially since some of the steroid users were only in seventh or eighth grade.
Earlier unrelated studies have found that:
1. Among those who admit using steroids, 80 percent said they believed the drugs could help them achieve their athletic dreams
2. 65 percent of steroid users would be willing to use a pill or powder, including dietary supplements, if it guaranteed they would reach their athletic goals, even if it might harm their health
3. 57 percent of users said they would use it even if it could shorten their lives
4. About 6 in 10 users believe that professional athletes have the right to use steroids, and they think that using anabolic steroids for athletic purposes is legal.
5. About 60 percent of users said that professional athletes influenced their (or a friend’s) decision to use PEDs
Beyond the Zone is a feature/documentary of how a 55 year old amateur powerlifter has defied the odds by setting two World Weigthlifting Endurance Records at 53, and 54 years and is positioned to attempt another world record in 2013 at 55 - drug free! www.walterurban.com
It’s a unique story of ground breaking “drug free” fitness training, teamwork, hard work, focus and inspiration developed to prove that performance enhancing drugs are not needed to reach your fitness – sports goals at any age!
Big things are possible if you work hard, smart and stay clean!
The Story Line
Walter Urban, a US citizen living in Canada is the father of 3 girls 7, 11 and 14. Active all his life in sports such as distance running, skiing, parachuting, race car driving - he has also been training and competing as an amateur power lifter around the world for 17 years. Training 3 to 4 days a week 2 to 3 hours per day, 50 weeks of the year. Having competed in the 2005, 2009 and 2010 World Championships finishing 6th in the World at 165lbs in 2010 drug free at the age of 52!
In 2010, injury and performance stagnation sent Walter in search of new training methods to get stronger. Along the journey fighting the effects of aging, blood pressure, body temperature, cardio vascular and lactic acid challenges, Walter nurtured and developed the concept of “total athlete training” centered around six core elements with the support of his core team of experts:
1. Maximizing activity specific technique or skill
2. Physical preparedness
3. Nutritional preparedness
4. Physical recovery
5. Injury avoidance
6. Mental performance
Based on the six core elements and 12 months of training in September 2011, Walter Urban attempted to break the Guinness World Record for the most amount of weight lifted squatting in one hour which was 125,065 lbs set in 2009 by 32 year old “Six Pack” Ryan Lapadat.
At 9:50 am September 15, 2011 on live national TV Walter officially broke the record, exceeding his target weight; lifting 127,245 lbs over 904 squats on Live with Regis and Kelly. The weight lifted was equivalent to lifting 18 African Elephants in one hour or about 800 times his body weight at the age of 53!
Less then 12 months later at 5:00 pm September 29th 2012 in Niagara Falls, just a short distance from where Nick Wallenda took his incredible walk across the falls, Walter set his second Guinness World Weightlifting Record live on national TV - this time for the “Heaviest Sumo Dead lift in One Minute” lifting 10,535 lbs in 60 seconds. The weight was equivalent to lifting 350 cases of water or 55 times his body weight in one minute at the age of 54!
The Message
In these days of Lance Armstrong, Barry Bonds and Roger Clemons the message is one of approaching fitness training from a new direction - that of the “total athlete”.
As in the past, Walter’s effort to break weightlifting world records is to stress the fact that “steroids and performance enhancing drugs are not necessary” to reach new heights in athletic performance – it’s about “training as a “total athlete”!
The core message of the film is to raise this awareness among the millions of amateur, semi-pro and pro athletes across North America - along with their dedicated sports fan base.
The secondary message is to bring attention to the fact “Age is not a Barrier”, and adults can continue to remain healthy and get stronger longer than even before, well into their 50’s, 60’s and 70’s with new and improved training methods.
Child obesity, adult obesity, rampant steroid use, unhealthy adult lifestyles, etc. are not the only headlines people need to read!
The purpose of this feature documentary is to spread that message!
