Ranges Energy Co-operative Limited

Ranges Energy is a community enterprise located in the Southern Dandenong Ranges area within the Shire of Yarra Ranges near Melbourne Victoria Australia. It is a mountainous forested area mixed with low land rural pasture on the edge of a sprawling suburbia.

The organisation was born as a community response to the impending problems of peak oil and climate change. Due to the hilly and forested nature of the area, many households in the community are unable to install solar to their own roofs, so the idea of installing renewable energy elsewhere, primarily on local government facilities was appealing and will assist to build future community resilience.

The organisation was established as a community owned co-operative with the objective to install solar farms on public and commercial building roof spaces, and sell the power generated directly to the tenant below or back through the grid, with a pecuniary return to investors.

The organisation may branch out into other aspects of renewable energy in the future, including generation of Wind, Hydro or Geothermal. While the organisation is not in the retail energy market at this point, we may also branch out into domestic supply from our renewable energy installations or sell renewable energy generating equipment.

The Name Ranges Energy was chosen because it has a focus on the location within the Yarra Ranges area and doesn’t focus on the specific (solar) energy being produced, although Ranges Energy will always be a producer of renewable energy.
