Packaging Design Brief

We are a small, newly established winery in need of an original, bold and outstanding bottle label design for our Big Leaf wine.

Our vineyard and winery are located on a 200 acre farm in a remote part of southern Oregon. The name "Big Leaf" was inspired by the large, overgrown size of all of the foliage here, including our grapevines. Things grow large and vigorous in Oregon! And everything is very lush and green. It is almost surreal or other-worldly, like the landscapes seen in the Lord of The Rings movies, or the land of Oz. It is a place that makes you say "wow" with its epic, large scale, natural beauty.

The name "Big Leaf" also captures the essence of our wine. It is big in flavor, quality and color. Our first release is a Pinot Noir (red). Pinot Noir wines often are subtle in flavor and thin in their color. Our label should convey that our Pinot Noir is a much more robust, darker, heavier, meatier, more flavorful wine that is a lot more fun than an "ordinary" wine. At the same time, this wine is not cheap, and so nothing in the label should convey "bargain," "low price," or "cheapness." This is a fine wine with a sense of adventure. Be sure to convey "quality" with your design along with "big," "adventure" and "fun".

The label should appeal to a younger demographic, both male and female, between the ages of 21 and 35. It should be non-traditional and adventurous and suggest a pushing of boundaries and a breaking of rules. This Pinot Noir does not conform to the normal "limitations" of the variety, therefore the label should not conform. It should have an "organic" or "natural" or "agricultural" vibe, as opposed to something mechanical or technical. It should, however, be contemporary. Do not confuse "natural" or "organic" with being nostalgic or old school. Think "agri-hipsters."

The label should be designed to fit on a Burgundy-style wine bottle (photo attached for reference). (Note: All Pinot Noir and Chardonnay is bottled in Burgundy bottles, If you are not sure about the bottle shape you can go to a local store and compare the various bottles. Locate a bottle of Pinot Noir or Chardonnay or anything identified as a "Burgundy Wine," and it should be the correct bottle. The tall, skinny bottles used for Cabernet Sauvignon are NOT correct)). Please see the "Must Have" notes for more on the bottle.

In summary, the final project should be a wine bottle label design that conveys bigness, vastness, adventurous, non-traditional, high quality wine. A good tagline to keep in mind is "Living Large."

Updates

Hello Designers,

Thank you for accepting the invitation to work on my wine label project!   Already, I have received some innovative and creative designs.  I have added some information to the project that I am also including in this message.

First, when designing for the Burgundy-style wine bottle, keep in mind that the label needs to fit on the lower, widest part of the bottle, or the part of the bottle that contacts a table top if you were to roll the bottle across the table on its side.  The label will be printed on sticky paper and rolled onto the bottle by a machine. The machine cannot apply labels or portions of labels to the neck of the bottle. The maximum size of a label that will fit this space is 5.5 inches wide by 4.5 inches tall. You DO NOT have to fill ALL of this space or confine the label shape to a rectangle, but the label cannot exceed this size or it won't stick to the bottle properly. It will really help if you can put your hands on an actual Burgundy wine bottle to see the logistics of applying the label. But if that is not possible, just do your best with the instructions you have. I am confident the winning design could be adjusted to fit the bottle, if necessary.

The other update is a photo I added to the project of our vineyard.   It was requested by one of the designers.  Please keep in mind our vines are only 1-2 years old, and so the vineyard is not mature. The vines will grow larger and be trained to look like the grape vines you are used to seeing in the coming years.

Thank you again for your creativity and hard work.  This is very exciting!

Hello Designers,
Thank you again for all of your great work.   It will be a difficult decision to select one winning design, there are so many that are strong.

I want to let you know I will be away from my office and computer most of the weekend so please be patient for comments on new designs.  I will send them as soon as I can.

Thank you!

Project Deadline Extended
Reason: I am extending the deadline because I had something unexpected come up that has kept me away from my office and computer for a few days. This has delayed my feedback to many designers. To allow for adequate time for requested changes to be done, I am extending the deadline. I appreciate your understanding. All of the designs submitted are high quality and I thank all of you for your creative work. Debra

Hello,

I think I am caught up on feedback on the designs and revisions.  If you are still waiting on feedback, please send me a message and I will respond with feedback.  I apologize again for the slow feedback. We have had freezing in our vineyard and have been up all night long lighting bonfires to heat the air and protect the spring leaves on our vines.  Thank you for your patience and your great work!

Requirements
Must have
  • *Must contain the words:

    Big Leaf (the brand)
2013 Pinot Noir (the vintage year and variety)

*The label must be designed to fit a Burgundy-style wine bottle. A photo is attached for reference.

*Additionally, the label needs to fit on the lower, widest part of the bottle. The label will be printed on sticky paper and rolled onto the bottle with a machine. The machine cannot apply labels to the neck of the bottle. The maximum size of a label that will fit this space is 5.5 inches wide by 4.5 inches tall. You DO NOT have to fill ALL of this space or confine the label shape to a rectangle, but the label cannot exceed this size or it won't stick to the bottle properly. I am confident the winning design could be adjusted to fit the bottle, if necessary
Nice to have
  • *Wine grape leaf or leaves.

*A concept I have been playing with is sunlight shining through leaves like light through a Tiffany lamp or a stained glass window. This is NOT a requirement for this label. However, if the concept inspires and idea, I would be most happy to see it.
Should not have
  • IF a leaf or leaves are included in the design (not a requirement) they MUST be wine grapevine leafs and preferably leaves of the Pinot Noir vine. Do not use generic leaves or identifiable leaves such as oak leaves, maple leaves, or anything that looks like the Canadian flag or the Toronto Maple Leafs hockey logo. Reference the attached photos of wine grape leaves to see the correct leaf type. I am happy to email more photos upon request. These photos may be used in whole or in part in your design, however, a leaf from a photo is NOT a requirement, nor is the image of a leaf or leaves.

This label should NOT be designed for Bordeaux-style wine bottles (the tall, skinny ones).
