Book Cover Design Brief
This short story is about an African-American college student who thrown in jail in Baltimore, the city that just had riots. Terrell is a Vassar College, glasses-wearing college graduate, and on the night he is arrested, he is wearing a pink Vassar sweatshirt. He is taken in a white van to the police station and spends the weekend there. He doesn't quite believe this is happening to him because he has been insulated from the realities of race while he was a student.
The most important visual detail in the story is a $1 bill over which someone has taped triangles of the number 20 to make it look like a $20 bill. He was thrown in jail because a bar woman in a leopard skin bikini accused him of passing fake money. I did this cover myself on Canva, and I was thinking about a kind of noir feeling. The story is very depressing because Terrell is scared out of his mind. His weekend in jail changes his relationship with the two white friends who were out drinking with him. For anyone who has never been to Baltimore, the streets are very uneven and they are made of brick. I don't need a back cover or spine because this is just going to be an ebook.
