I have an idea for my design that goes with my design style but I'm not sure if it would be a good fit for this particular task. I'm wondering if the text ("Find Me on DesignCrowd") needs to be the primary focal point (in other words, immediately apparent and distinct from the rest of the design) or if it can be "merged" with the design in a way that makes it less noticeable, but possibly more interactive?

Yes, you may use free images but you should reference any sources that you do use. Importantly, you should not use any images which you (or I) do not have a license to use.
